1.First things first, change your locks.
You want to be sure that you and you only have access to your home. If your'e handy and enjoy the DIY route, the cost of new locks is about $10 to $20. Or call a locksmith, you can usually get them changed for less than $100.
2. Get familiar with your water heater/valve and breaker box.
These two things are very important for you, as the homeowner to know where and how they work. In any plumbing or electrical emergency or even a simple repair, it is imperative that you at least know how to switch these on and off. I can tell you from experience, that learning these things saved me an unnecessary and costly visit from the electrician.
3.Wipe down all fixtures and cabinets!
Light fixtures, faucets, cabinets, and even closets have been collecting dusts for weeks and even months before you moved in. Clean it out before you put your possessions on or near them. Even steam cleaning that carpet may be a good idea! Which brings me to my next tip...
4. Pest Prevention!
The last thing you want in your new home is a pesky visitor or visitors (eek!). This is for Interior and exterior critters. If you notice droppings or suspicious markings from pests. Your local hardware store will be able to assist with this. If you think you have a bigger pest problem, contact a pest control company. It will be anywhere from $100 and up but at least you know your home will be safe for you and your family.
